The Garrick Year
Publisher: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1964
Edition: 1st UK, 1st impression, signed
Binding: Hardback
Only Drabble's second novel, this is signed and dedicated to Kate Flint, for many years a noted academic in English literature, thus it is possible the two were associates, even friends. This novel is one of Drabble's more noted works and deals primarily with women's roles in society, in particular the perceived conflict between the intellectual and the purely domestic; this set against the contemporary society Drabble also described. It also draws on the author's first hand experience of the theatre. Superb photograph of your author on rear flap. There is a little foxing to text block edges. The jacket has some loss to front top edge. Spine yellowed. Some loss to rear top edge. Similar bumping and loss to bottom edge.
