You're Welcome to Ulster

Publisher: Gollancz, 1970

Edition: 1st UK, 1st impression

Binding: Hardback

For a while, Menna Gallie was a 'forgotten' novelist - being Welsh and a woman didn't help her much in London publishing circles.  Nevertheless, with a revived interest in Welsh writing encouraged by initiatives such as the Writers of Wales series, she has returned, rightly, to the forefront. This novel is set in the tense Northern Ireland of 1970 and is fascinating for its status as almost first person reportage, and now risks accusations of some slight naïvety, starting with the remarkably juvenile choice of cover design. Of note also is Gallie's take on the mores and morals of the then northern Irish Catholic middle class.
The book is very clean and tight with no markings. The jacket has some small scuffs and losses, but is otherwise intact.  Price clipped.  A little grubby overall.
