An Acre of Land/Poetry for Supper (set of 2 publications)
Publisher: Montgomeryshire Printing Co./Rupert Hart-Davis, 1952/1958
Edition: 1st UK, 1st impression
Superb and rare set. The first booklet is only the second of Thomas' published collections and, as such, was produced in small quantities in Newtown, mid Wales. The early impressions sold out very quickly and thus this first one is very scarce, more so in such good condition. The card stock is as sparse and economical as Thomas' verse inside - which are some of Thomas' best known poems, in which are evident his characteristic love for Wales tempered with bitterness at what he sees happening to it. The later collection, Poetry for Supper, is an altogether glossier affair from a London publisher and by then Thomas' reputation had been cemented as the foremost poetic chronicler of what was modern rural Wales.
The book contains a review (newspaper clipping) from the Times Literary Supplement of 19/09/58 - "...the questions posed by [his poems] are profound ones..."
Condition: Acre of Land: Very good. Previous owner's inscriptions to front end paper. Pages a little dog-eared to top RH corners. Poetry for Supper: Fine
Jackets: Booklet suffers from some tanning to edges and a small tear to the top of fragile paper cover. Poetry for Supper's jacket is in fine condition with only a very small loss to the spine top. It carries the publisher's intact Recommended choice banner.
