The Dram Shop (L'Assommoir)
Publisher: Hamish Hamilton, 1951
Edition: 1st UK thus, 1st impression
This novel is ferocious in its condemnation of the effects of drink and poverty in nineteenth century Paris. The French title is untranslatable as such - a place where people go purely to get knocked out, hammered, out of it - none of the couthy convivial quaffing suggested by this quaintly translated title. Otherwise, this is a rare jacketed version of the unexpurgated 1951 translation, with a useful introduction by Alan Hodge. There are no marks or inscriptions. Some foxing/spotting but clean cloth covers. The jacket is largely intact, not price clipped but some old tape marks. Edges sunned.
