Mr Stimpson and Mr Gorse
Publisher: Constable, 1953
Edition: 1st UK, 1st impression
Binding: Hardback
Second in Hamilton's Gorse trilogy, written just before his premature death. It may well be considered the last book he wrote or typed, as he had to dictate the final one. The writing is patchy although the social observation is, as usual, superb and many view this novel as a comic masterpiece in characterisation and dialogue. Drink pervades the novel and is at times central to plot development; an appalling 'ye-olde' pub - The Friar - serves as one set in what could and perhaps should have been a play. Hamilton was also a noted dramatist and this novel follows the sparse approach his directors liked. As well as the pub, the novel unfolds in only two other places, mainly: a lady's house, and a seedy London hotel. The blue covers are very good with intact lettering. Top edge has attractive blue spraying. All pages are tanned to edges due to inferior paper. No foxing. No marks or inscriptions. The jacket is largely complete, with some losses, although has been repaired, badly, with tape (evident). Not price-clipped.
