A very clean and 'as new' copy of Gibbon's posthumously published new novel of the Mearns, which was shaping up to be a worthy successor to the author's masterpiece, Sunset Song. Gibbon again employs his sharp insight and lends his deft and unique comedic voice:
"Now the second of the crofts in that little bouroch was Badymicks that stood outbye the land of Cruickshank, a little low dirty skleiter of place, the biggings were old and tumbling down ... [whose wife] could cook that foul South dish the haggis in a way that made the damn thing nearly eatable, not as usual with a smell like a neglected midden and a taste to match, or so you imagined, not that you'd ever eaten middens."
Lewis Grassic Gibbon was working on this novel when he died during surgery at the age of 34. His literary estate gave the manuscript for publication and an introduction is given in this book by Professor Ian Campbell, long acknowledged and respected Gibbon expert. Also contains the author's manuscript notes, in Appendix.
