One of the truly outstanding children's books of the twentieth century, this is equalled only perhaps by the author's own debut Watership Down. In fact, many prefer this later book for its slightly darker - and early - approach to issues of environmentalism and animal rights, as presented for children in an engaging and very sensitive manner.  This book is fine in all respects except for some slight spotting to the top edge. It is presented superbly with the incomparable drawings by Lake District author & illustrator Alfred Wainwright.
